On January 11, 2023, TruConnect filed notice of a data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after learning that an unauthorized party was able to access confidential consumer data stored on the company’s computer network. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ personal information, including their names and Social Security numbers. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, TruConnect began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.
If you have a cell phone or wireless service through TruConnect, you probably never thought twice before giving the company all the information it asked for. However, given the news of the recent TruConnect data breach, it appears that your information could now be in the hands of the cybercriminals who orchestrated the attack. Certainly, these criminals are the ones responsible for the attack, but was there something TruConnect could have done to stop them? As we’ve discussed in previous posts, companies are the first and last lines of defense when it comes to data breaches. And consumers understandably trust that a company will live up to its obligation to protect their information. When a company is negligent in how it handles consumer data, it may be held liable through a data breach lawsuit.
