Porsche Design 1919 Date Chronograph 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition best luxury watches
This month, luxury car giant Porsche celebrates 70 years of building the famous sports car. A little-known fact about Porsche is that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche founded Porsche Design in 1972; a division of Porsche dedicated to applying its parent brand's design principles to other mechanical and non-mechanical vehicles areas such as sunglasses, electronics and watches. To celebrate Porsche’s 70th anniversary, Porsche Design has released the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Roadster Limited Edition, becoming the 13th watch in the Porsche Design 1919 series. The design of this watch is inspired by the dashboard of the Porsche 356, the predecessor to the 911.
Let’s start with the case. The watch measures 42mm x 11.9mm, has a sapphire crystal, and the titanium case is completely covered with a "titanium carbide coating" that gives the watch a matte black finish - which I don't usually like in most cases kind of look, but find one that suits the design. Since this watch is a date/time only model, it has a crown, which I feel is a little larger than it needs to be, at least in the rendering. The slim, skeletonized lugs are undoubtedly my favorite aspect of a Porsche Design replica watches for sale. They make the watch easy to spot and light as a feather. With its matte coating, the watch looks almost futuristic and tactical – and feels like it’s a step away from what a 1940s dashboard claims to be.
I think the Porsche 356 influence is more evident on the dial. The high-contrast white-on-black color scheme makes the watch very legible, if not a bit bland for me (although I guess that could be interpreted as functional). The date window at 3 o’clock complements the black dial beautifully, which is something I need to give Porsche Design credit for, as it’s not always the case with watches at this price point. Above 6 o'clock is a Porsche 356 and the year "1948". Tying the ceramic hour markers together is a gray contrasting line, characteristic of car instruments and one of the few features that gives this high quality cheap watches its character. When paired with the white handsets and markers, the dial is both attractive and aggressive.
Speaking of the movement, the first thing I'll say is that based on the marketing materials, what's actually inside the watch is vague at best. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in the watch industry. Porsche Design claims this is a "high-quality automatic Swiss movement" that features the Porsche Design Icon Rotor, although you can't see it because of the solid caseback. It’s not until the watch is added to the website that you learn it’s powered by a Sellita SW200-1, a fairly standard off-the-shelf movement with nothing to suppress in the initial press release. I do think Porsche missed the opportunity to have the movement visible, especially if the rotor is bespoke. Instead, the case back features commemorative graphics and a limited-edition number. Is there anything I need to change to make the watch more lively? Yes. What marketing terms would I mention? Absolutely. Even though I don't own a Porsche, nor am I a die-hard fan of the brand (although certainly appreciate its quality), nor am I a collector of Porsche products of any kind, I can see its appeal. Don't get me wrong, this watch is attractive but a very safe version for a Porsche and for an anniversary edition I'm a bit dissatisfied with the lack of "Oo<a i=2>mph" throughout this watch Available in the 1919 series. If you're a fan of high-contrast, low-frills, "performance" watches, this is the watch for you. If you're familiar with the Porsche 356, then I imagine its overall impact on this watch is a bit head-scratching. If you were just perusing Porsche Design's 1919 collection, it would be easy to get lost in the Datetimer 70Y among other similar designs.
