Mace or javitri, a spice that grows on tropical nutmeg trees, is delicate, aromatic, and adaptable. The fruits of this aromatic evergreen tree yield two spices: nutmeg spice and mace. Because they are descended from the same mother, mace is sometimes referred to as nutmeg's sister spice. Like a big sister, it also acts as nutmeg's defender since the nutmeg's hard shell is protected from injury by the brilliant red, leathery, web-like coating known as the aril.
Although it was quite popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the spice has since become less popular. Which is unfortunate because some people would say that mace is a spice that is even more deserving than nutmeg.
