If you own a home and like to do small projects, putting in a drip edge extension is an easy way to make your roof drain better without hiring a contractor. You can finish this upgrade in one afternoon if you have the right tools and take your time.
Get your supplies together first. You will need roofing nails, drip edge extensions, tin snips, a hammer, a ladder, and roofing sealant. Check to see that your roofline and fascia are in good shape before you start. Fix any signs of rot or loose paint first to make sure the base is strong.
Step one is to put things in the right place. Put the new drip edge extension under the bottom row of shingles, making sure it overlaps the old drip edge by at least an inch. To make sure water falls into the gutter, the horizontal lip should stick out a little past the fascia.
Step two is to fasten. Use galvanized roofing nails to attach the extension to the roof deck. Put the nails about eight inches apart, and make sure they are high enough that the shingle layer hides them. This not only keeps the nails looking clean, but it also stops them from rusting.
Next, seal the seams. Put a thin line of roofing sealant where two extension pieces meet. This stops leaks and makes sure that water flows smoothly along the edge. To keep gaps from forming, always overlap pieces by at least two inches.
After putting it up, use a hose to run water along the edge of the roof to make sure it drains properly. The water should flow cleanly into the gutter and not drip behind it. If you see any backflow, change the angle a little bit or add more sealant where it's needed.
After you put in your drip edge extension, you won't have to do much to keep it up. Just check it every season to make sure it stays safe and free of rust.
This small project will not only make your roof work better, but it will also make you feel good about having done a professional-grade upgrade yourself. If you want ready-made, long-lasting, and perfectly sized products, check out Guttahs.com for the best results.
