Fildena, a medication containing sildenafil citrate, was not “formally defined” as a unique drug through a specific scientific discovery date because it is essentially a generic version of Viagra, which was originally developed by Pfizer and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998. After the Viagra patent expired in 2013, various pharmaceutical companies, including Fortune Healthcare in India, began manufacturing and marketing generic equivalents such as Fildena.
Therefore, while sildenafil citrate was formally defined and approved as an erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment in 1998, FILDENA itself emerged later, around the mid-2010s, when generic sildenafil products became widely available. It is marketed primarily in international and online markets, especially where generic medications are legally sold after patent expiration.
Fildena works in the same way as Viagra — by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), relaxing blood vessels in the penis, and increasing blood flow during sexual stimulation. Although it is not a patented brand, it follows the same pharmacological principles defined for sildenafil citrate during its initial FDA approval.
